Apparently, though, this theater had little space or money, so Ibert wrote the score for woodwind quintet instead of a larger ensemble. Since Ibert had studied theater as well as music, he was a natural composer choice for theater works. The quintet music is based on incidental music that Ibert wrote for a five-act comedy Le stratagème des roués ( The Beaux’ Strategem, L 41) that Ibert completed early in 1930 for a March performance. Trois Pièces Brèves was composed in 1930. But from 1922 to 1930, what we quintet players have is Jacques Ibert (born Jacques-François-Antoine Ibert, August 15, 1890, died Feb. Milhaud, who was well known in the Parisian art world, would later write a couple of quintets. Heitor Villa-Lobos had his quintet premiered in Paris. So it’s surprising that there aren’t any other French composers on our list of creators of woodwind quintets in this decade. Whichever language you used, after World War I composers and conductors from the United States and South America and throughout Europe were flocking to Paris to learn from the leading French composers and teachers and absorb the radical ideas about music that were encouraged by both French vin and café. Although the decade was known as the “Roaring Twenties” in the United States, in France it had the more direct name of “années folles” or “Crazy Years.” Paris in the 1920s was considered the center of culture for all of Europe.
